We know it can be challenging to try and find the right time and space to tell your partner that you want an abortion. You might be afraid of his reaction. Will he want to support you? Will he be excited about your pregnancy? The mix of emotions can be overwhelming, but you are not alone.

While no one can force you into telling your partner about your pregnancy and that you’re considering abortion, we always suggest being open and honest in the relationship.

What’s Your Relationship Like?

It’s also important to assess your current relationship with your partner before sharing the news of your pregnancy decision. Ask questions like:

  • Is your partner supportive when it comes to your pregnancy?
  • Did he demonstrate that he wants to be involved in the process?
  • What are his thoughts about abortion?
  • Do I feel safe to share the news?

All of these factors are important to consider when approaching the conversation before deciding on a time and place to share the news.

Is Your Safety at Risk?

Before we dive into how to tell your partner that you want an abortion, if you feel at all threatened by your partner or unsafe, don’t hesitate to get help.

If you’re pregnant and your partner is abusive, it’s essential to understand that your safety is the number one priority. Contact the National Domestic Violence hotline for immediate help.

Consider Your Hesitations

It’s important to ask yourself the hard questions like why do you not want to share your decision of abortion? Consider telling your partner and taking his input, even if it’s not quite the same as you.

Let your guard down and listen to his questions and concerns about your options. Your partner may have input and advice you haven’t thought of yet.

Timing Does Matter

Timing is everything when it comes to unexpected news. Find a time when your partner is most rested, off work, and has time and space to take in everything you tell him. It matters more than you think.
