Deciding to terminate a pregnancy through abortion is a major life event. It’s not uncommon for some women to feel regret after taking the abortion pill and wish to stop the process.

If this is your situation, you have a small window of time in which your abortion may be successfully reversed. Let’s look first at how the abortion pill works.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, uses two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, to terminate an early pregnancy no more than 10 weeks gestation.

The first step in the abortion pill is mifepristone. Mifepristone blocks the pregnancy hormone progesterone. About 24-48 hours later, misoprostol is given to start uterine contractions and expel the pregnancy from the uterus.

How Does Reversing the Abortion Pill Work?

Studies have shown that the abortion pill can be reversed with high doses of the hormone progesterone. These will typically be delivered in both pill form and via shots.

It’s important to note that the abortion pill can only be reversed during the window after mifepristone is taken. Once misoprostol is taken, the abortion cannot be stopped.

Is Reversing the Abortion Pill Safe?

Yes. One study followed nearly 800 women who all received high doses of progesterone in order to stop their abortion and found the treatment to be safe and effective. The study concluded that progesterone treatments have a 64% success rate in reversing medical abortions without the risk of birth defects.
