It’s been a little more than a year since Roe vs. Wade was overthrown. Since that time, states have continued to adapt and edit their laws regarding abortion.
If you’re an Indiana resident, you might have wondered where the state laws have fallen on abortion. Here’s a quick summary of the current abortion laws and regulations for Indiana.
What Types of Abortion Are Available?
Women seeking an abortion have two options: a medical or surgical procedure.
A medical abortion uses the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol to stop the pregnancy from growing and then expels it from the uterus. The abortion pill is a form of medical abortion and is used to terminate pregnancies up to 10 weeks gestation.
Surgical abortions are typically required when a pregnancy is more than 10 weeks along. The process takes place in a clinic or hospital and begins by dilating the cervix. Once the cervix is opened, forceps or a suction device are used to remove the pregnancy from the womb.
Can I Still Have An Abortion In Indiana?
A few weeks ago, the Indiana Supreme Court voted to uphold the abortion ban put forth for the state. Exceptions to the ban are clearly outlined with the intent to protect women’s lives and their interests.
In cases of rape or incest, abortions will be allowed up to 10 weeks gestation. For situations in which a woman’s life is at risk, such as an ectopic pregnancy, abortions can be performed up to 20 weeks gestation.
