If you’re an Indiana resident, you’ve probably heard the Indiana Supreme Court recently confirmed the abortion ban put forth following the overturning of Roe vs. Wade.
Some people are elated by the verdict, while others are fearful the new law will bring severe repercussions for women’s health.
So what exactly does the verdict mean for women living in Indiana, specifically for women struggling with an unexpected pregnancy?
Here’s a quick breakdown of the new law and how it will affect women moving forward.
What Does the New Verdict Ban?
The new verdict upholds a ban on all elective abortions. While that might sound extreme, the new law includes various exceptions to protect women’s lives and safeguard against anyone dying from being denied an abortion.
Are There Exceptions?
Yes. Women experiencing pregnancy due to rape or incest will be allowed an abortion up to 10 weeks gestation if they desire to terminate.
Other exceptions include abortions permitted up to 20 weeks gestation if continuing the pregnancy endangers the mother’s life.
The 20-week exception is extended to pregnancies diagnosed with a lethal fetal anomaly.
So the good news is, women will not be denied an abortion if their life is in danger. Women’s lives will continue to be protected and valued in the state of Indiana and will not be jeopardized because of the new abortion law.
